Vote for the Roman Baths
and help us win the Art Fund Prize!
The Roman Baths has been long listed for the most
prestigious prize in the museum world. The Art Fund
Prize 2011 is worth £100,000 – and there can only be one
winner!
The Roman Baths is one of only ten museums (there are
more than 2000 in Britain) that have made it through to
the final rounds of the Prize. The Chairman of the
Judges – Michael Portillo – made the announcement on the
BBC arts and culture programme Front Row on the 2nd
February. According to the judges, the views of
the public will be an important factor in deciding who
wins the prize. If you've visited the Roman Baths
recently and seen the transformational changes brought
about through The Roman Baths Development, then please
vote for us here on the The Art Fund Prize website
http://artfundprize.org.uk/2011/vote/index.php and
take part in the online poll. Roman Baths Manager
Stephen Clews said, "It’s really thrilling to progress
to this stage in The Art Fund Prize. It gives great
recognition to the work of the project team over the
last five years and to the vision of the Council in
deciding to back the project, but most of all it gives
our visitors a chance to really let people know what
they think of us!" The winner of The Art Fund
Prize will be announced in June. ^ Top
The Last Great Challenge Expedition
Nobody’s ever walked from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back
before, later this year adventurers Justin Miles and John Wilton-Davies are
heading south to complete the mission on the Last Great Challenge
expedition. Once completed, the 2,200km trek dragging near 200kg loads will
also become the longest unsupported polar journey in history. The last
person to get anywhere near close to completing this journey was Captain
Robert Falcon Scott on the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition in 1912. Justin
and John aim to complete the mission and bring one of the last polar
‘firsts’ to Britain just one year short of the centenary of his death. The
expedition is about much more than just two guys walking across a cold
continent; they are heavily involved with national programmes and
initiatives in education, health promotion, schools fitness, and raising
funds for charity. Justin and John have developed a national fitness
initiative called the Great Heart Challenge which aims to address the
inactivity problem. There are a few adult versions of the GHC, such as one
being run as a gym based challenge through the national chain of Spirit
Health Clubs, but the main drive of the Great Heart Challenge is through a
national schools version which has been developed around an ‘adventure’
theme. The Last Great Challenge expedition is also heavily involved in the
corporate world, from sponsorships to running team building events and
motivational/after dinner talks. To find out more about the Last Great
Challenge visit their website on
