Westonbirt Arboretum is a magical world of trees. There are 18,000 of them from
all over the world, planted from 1829 to the present day, producing 600 acres of
beautifully landscaped Cotswold countryside. Visitors to Westonbirt can wander
where they please along 17 miles of marked trails or simply sit in a leafy
glade and admire some of the tallest, oldest and indeed the rarest trees and
shrubs of their kind in the world. Westonbirt really is one of the worlds most
outstanding arboretums and a place for all seasons.
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 9am, Saturday & Sunday 8am.
Arboretum closed: 5pm (1 November - 31 March - or DUSK if earlier), 8pm (1
April - 31 October or DUSK if earlier). Forest shop, plant centre & maples
restaurant - open daily 10am - 5pm. (Except: Plant Centre closed 25
December 2007 to 2 January 2008, Forest Shop closed 25/26 Dec & 1 Jan 08).

Pools, statues, colonnades and cloisters in a remarkable

few enchanted evenings.

There are many interesting features, including the majestic Palladian
bridge, one of only four in the world. The Wilderness Project, supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, is the final phase of the restoration of the garden,
reinstating the Serpentine Lake, Cascade and Cabinet. A 5-minute walk from the
garden leads onto the Bath Skyline, a 6-mile circular walk which encompasses
woodlands, meadows, an Iron Age hill fort, Roman settlements, 18th-century
follies and spectacular views. There is no direct access from the Skyline route
to the garden.

junction 18. Dyrham Park is a beautiful baroque country
house set in 110 hectares (274 acres) of garden and parkland, designed by Talman
for William Blathwayt, Secretary at War during the reign of William III.
Set in beautiful parkland with fallow deer and views across the Bristol Channel
into the Welsh mountains.

The American Museum was designed by Jeffry
Wyatville in 1820, and built on a hill above the River Avon, the large,
thirty-room mansion seemed ideally able to accommodate the host of artefacts
they had collected. Now, over forty years since its opening, the American Museum
in Britain is still the only museum of Americana outside the United States. The
American Museum is a non-profit organisation dedicated to furthering the
understanding of American culture and history to deepen and strengthen lasting
ties between the two nations.

A unique, Victorian boating station with tea gardens and licensed
restaurant. Traditional wooden skiffs, punts and canoes for hire by the hour or
the day. In the boating season mid-week
visitors are offered a free afternoon’s boating to explore the attractions of
the River Avon. If you can’t spare a whole afternoon, what could be nicer than
to take an hour at the end of your day’s sightseeing and relax on the water in
preparation for an evening out in one of Bath’s many excellent restaurants.
The Boating Station can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by water or by
car; off-street parking is is available (owner’s risk, as usual). Opening Hours: Daily April

Starting from our Brass Knocker Basin base - with
its Café-Restaurant, historic canal display, railway and canal bookshop,
chandlery and wonderful views - you join the Kennet and Avon Canal beside the
magnificent Dundas Aqueduct which carries the canal high over the River Avon.
Most of the length between Bath and the lovely old wool town of Bradford on Avon
runs through the beautiful Limpley Stoke valley. The river is crossed
again by another aqueduct in the hamlet of Avoncliff. The waterway enters
Bath through the romantic tunnels of Sydney Gardens. There is a lot to see
of historical interest and wildlife abounds. Many varieties of bird, from swans
to kingfishers are to be found along the canal.
