My husband and I are moving to Bath. My husband will be working south of the hospital, off Newbridge. We are looking for a safe, nice, professional area to let out a house. Can anyone suggest an area?

Thank you!

Hi, I'm wondering if other people have a problem with the tap water here. I moved here from Essex 8 months ago and I find the water really disgusting. I've lived in quite a few places in the UK, but this has the worst water I've experienced. I can smell the chlorine as soon as I put the tap on. I'm particularly concerned because my hair has become very brittle and started falling out a lot when I wash it. Also I've read that there is strong evidene for an increased risk of bladder cancer for those who bathe in chlorinated water.

Is this an issue in Bath and is anyone protesting to the water company about it. I'm not even sure which water company it is. I tried posting this on the Bath Forum, but the site wouldn't work.

I have been to Bath recently and it's a wonderful little city. Great buildings and the Roman bath is carefully preserved and presented. But: I am very sorry to tell: the town is awfully littered with cigarette stumbs and dirt in general and leaves an very untidy impression. It's a pity really. With kindest regards.

Have just spent a lovely day in Bath. We particularly enjoyed the audio tour round the Roman Baths. It was good to be able to listen the different voices as we went round and, although it was busy, we saw everything. Our visit to the Jane Austin Museum was less inspiring. We felt that the entrance fee was rather expensive, the exhibition short and the talk gave us little more information than we already knew. Sorry to go on but the regency tea-room upstairs on this museum fell short of expectation too. In fact we missed the beginning of the talk because they took over 15mins to let us pay even though we were stood at the counter and they weren't busy. Thank goodness for the buildings and churches of Bath, We will be back but maybe we won't revisit everywhere!! Heather Turner

Hi,having just returned from Bath ( i was visiting relatives in the Twerton area ) and i have to say i just love visiting the place!! Bath is a beautiful city. the parks, the gardens, the people, the abbey is something else! i was giving a tour in the car around the Royal crescent and other local places of interest after all the family had enjoyed a sunday carvery in the Weston pub.Lovely!! The people of Bath are so lucky to be able to live their lives here ( i wish i could!) I live up north in cumbria which is a 5 hour train journey away, but the truth is i would travel 10 hours to visit relatives in bath. I cant wait until i visit again in December and go visit the christmas market with all the little huts! thankyou. Mr J.Armstrong. West Cumbria.

A lovely place to visit but living here is another story. Snobby, cliques, expensive, over priced, and generally a place where the council makes things for tourists and not locals. There is ONE butchers that is over priced and ONE fishmongers and NO bakers. No bowling alley, no things for teenagers or anyone to do really in their spare time. You cannot cycle as it's too hilly and this is the second highest city in the UK for POLLUTION. Sound fun now?????

My wife and I decided to go x-mas shopping in Bath on 7/12/07 travelling from chepstow. The park and ride at landsdown was full with people sitting in cars waiting for spaces to come available. We made the mistake of continuing in to town by car. It took half an hour to get in and when there there were no car parking spaces available. We left and returned home. We will never come to Bath again for shopping at potentially busy times.

Dear Tourist.
Proposed Rapid Transport Route from Newbridge Park & Ride will cause untold misery for local residents. The route along disused Green Park rail track will immediately border hundreds of residents rear gardens, adversely affecting thousands of peoples privacy.
The route is intended to take passengers through new Western Development to sale homes and promote business facilities.Your present journey time into city will be considerably delayed.
Please sit in your garden when you return home, walk 12 to 15 paces from rear of your actual house and imagine a bus passing at head height every 10 minutes.Bath residents will suffer this
Please visit BANES council website for more details concerning proposed route.

I chanced to find recollections of Mrs. Joan Doel which had been place on BBC Wiltshire's website; "World War Two Peoples War". She wrote that as a newly-qualified teacher, she was sent with evacuee children from Manchester, to Brinscall, a small village on the Lancashire moorland. I was a pupil at St. Joseph's School to which the city children were allocated, and Mrs. Doel - who was then our Miss Sarjantson - became a well-loved teacher.
Although Mrs. Joan Doel's recollectins were placed with BBC Wiltshire in July 2005, it would be rather special if I (Jim Lancaster) could get in touch with her and be able to share a few more memories of those wartime schooldays. My contact addresses are; e-mail LRusselllee2@aol.com or "Franciscus", 26 Russell Square, Chorley, Lancs. PR6 0AS. (Tel. 01257 265320)

I have just visited Bath after a break of 10 years and although it is as beautiful as ever may I suggest 4 things.
1. Cut the traffic- pedestrianize or bring in a congestion charge (it worked wonders for London)
2. Cut the prices - everything is vastly overpriced esp. the accommodation which thinks it's better than it is.
3. Cut the 'cheesiness' - do you really need Jane Austen lookalikes walking around, Bath is lovely without gimicky things.
4. Have proactive guides ready to help tourists that look lost; go visit Stratford to see what I mean.
Hope these points help.

After living in Bath for half your life you begin to realise how little Bath has to offer for its residents. Nothing ever changes, its always the same. No decent shops at all, the nightlife is terrible as all the clubs are too small and too expensive. And the worst part about Bath is the lack of Jobs. There is no where to work. Unless you want to work at Helphire, but really who does! Oh I nearlly forgot to mention Bath has a high number of pretencious stuck up people. Im glad I moved away!

I like Bath very much. I stayed as an International student of University of Bath for 3 years plus from 1996 and enjoyed every moment of my stay there especially the beauty of this place. Eventhough I've left this city for 7 years, I can still remember all the places that bring good memories during my stay there such as the Royal Crescent where I used to have picnics during summer days with friends, the Pulteney Bridge where I used to cross almost everyday to go to the university and all the shops in the city centre where I used to do shopping almost every Friday afternoon. I hope to return and see the city again.

Hello Bath,

I am amazed at how so many Bath City websites are rubbish - take for example the new Visit Bath Site - is SOOOO SLOOOOOWWWW and takes you ages to find anything and once you do (if your not asleep) is probably wrong anyway!!!!

Bath.co.uk is not that bad but needs improvement (though compared to the other sites is simply in league of its own).

Anyway - well done www.bath.co.uk and keep up the good work for the little people out there

Living in California has many benefits (almost all year round sunshine and a small variance of temperature from winter to summer to name but one) however, if you are a Bathonian of many years standing, there are times when the deeply felt roots need a little pampering - particularly at this time of year, and that's when I "escape" to Bath by calling up your website!

I take the Tour, peruse the shops and look at the property section. Explore Bath thru the ages and hone up my general knowledge of Bath - past and present. When I have finished, I take one last look at "Bath at a glance" and write to you. Thank you for your extremely thorough web site and thank you for allowing me to indulge myself.

A dedicated Bathonian at heart - even if an absent one.

I worked at the R.U.H. for 6 months in 2002/03 and remember the patients well and their stories of how things used to be. The cotton mills in the district and the individually owned shops that made shopping in Bath very exciting! All gone now, but recent history. One day I'll revisit because I simply loved the Bath experience. Regards to all, Chris Doneley. x

My wife and I are from Canada and visited Bath early Oct.this year with my brother and his wife from Portsmouth.
We drove and used the Park and Ride from Odd Down into the city.
The bus dropped us off outside of a McDonalds at a shopping precinct, this was our first visit to Bath, and our first sight was a very dirty and rundown area of the city. Overall we were NOT impressed by the cleanliness and have no desire to return.
We did however enjoy the Baths and a bus tour.

I came to Bath to shop with my Mother and young daughter yesterday. We parked in The Podium car park, but when we arrived back to pay for our ticket we found that we were liable for a £25 overstay charge. There were also two young students who had travelled from London and they were also astounded and very upset at the charge. We had all failed to notice the signs stating that this charge existed and the pricing notice implies that 4 hours is the cut-off after which no further charge is made. A local lady said that people from outside Bath are always being caught out because it's not long enough to shop for the whole day. What a horrid way to remember the city.

I have just moved to the USA from the UK. For me Bath holds some of my most happy memories, it really is a wonderful place. For my last few years in the UK I would spend weekends away with my mum. We always meant to visit diffrent places but we went back to Bath time after time. We shopped, we took rides on the tour buses and would wander for hours through Baths beautiful streets. I miss those times very much and im thrilled to have found this website. Now whenever i get homesick i can visit through this site. Thanks Mandy

Hi,

GREAT WEB SITE - HTTP://WWW.BATH.CO.UK

I had a wonderful time in the City Of Bath and I would like to thank those wonderful people at www.bath.co.uk for making a great trip even better.

Up-to-date information, excellent presentation and easy to use menu system.

Why oh why could not the so called official site of Bath be like this.

Both my husband and I used www.bath.co.uk to plan all our trips, restaurants and the choice of hotel - we stayed at (the Haringtons - what a fab place this was).

I am thinking of going to Rome next year and I cannot find a site that is as dedicated to the City Of Bath as www.bath.co.uk in a Rome version.

Anyway - great site, so keep it up and well done!!!

Yours sincerely,

What a nightmare of a place to live. Just moved here a week ago and cannot find one single butchers, bakers, or greengrocers in the city centre. Yes, there's fishworks, and a butchers on Green Street, but you need a second mortgage to go in them. What have I done? Nearest Tesco is BRISTOL!

Anyone else agree?

Let me know!

I was very disappointed to see a model of the proposed (and approved?) Southgate/bus depot plan. Georgian pastiche buildings with narrow (wind tunnel?) alleys where litter and unsavoury elements can accumulate, and residents in their roof garden terraces above likely to be obliged to call for the police in the event of witnessing robbery and violent behaviour. I also see those living south of the river are expected continue their grotty subway rat run and then have to dodge the buses leaving the new terminus.

Bath's earlier city fathers would be ashamed of our pavements strewn with bird droppings, chewing gum, butt ends and take- away cartons. I am desperate to be proud of being a citizen, but it gets more difficult by the day.

Having lived near Bath 25 years ago it was very interesting to return. There seems to have been a lot done to smarten the place up since then - the nicely polished cathedral is a vast improvement and the pedestrianisation is very nice - except getting to you hotel can be difficult.
We stayed at the Abbey Hotel, for the second time. It is a "proper" old fashioned hotel, with all the amenities you'd expect but in a nice old building. The place is great, except for the appalling evening restaurant and unwelcoming bar (no decent beer!).
It was good to see Duck, Son & Plinker still going after all these years. There's plenty to see in the town, and enough shops to keep event the most dedicated shopper busy. It's a great shame that all the really intersting bits cost a *lot* to get in - particularly the Roman Baths at £10.00 each - when we've already paid £20million via the lottery.
We ate out at in the eveings, one in a curry house that made all sort of claims about how good it was and turned out to be very average, and on te second occasion at Strada, and absolutey fantastic Italian restaurant - highly reccomended, but book early.
It was a shame to see so many homeless about, but there was plenty of street entertainment to compensate.
All in all, a very pleasant weekend - we will be back.

Hi,
This was our second visit to the city Bath, a beautiful place to see and eat.
We ate at two major big resturants there, one being an Indian resturant which i am sorry to say was not as good as all the leaflets and banter says.
We stayed at the excellent hotel in the main city of Bath facing all the beautiful buildings.
But this second time round was a bit distressing because there was loads of beggers and homeless people whos constant harassment gets a bit too much.
The saddest site was a gang of homeless people sleeping in a very big major car park every night,.
Apart from that we are coming to Bath again it is a very beautiful and pleasant place to visit with tons of places to eat and drink, loads of shops and tourists sites.
Side shows in the street were amazing and free to watch whilst you shop, lovely little corner cafes with every choice of coffees you could simply imaging.
A total joy to visit and has been recommended to my family and friends.

I had the opportunity to visit Bath in the Spring of 2005 while on a 2 week visit to England and Ireland. We were with a group of college students comparing the differences between the american educational system vs. the british educational system. Bath was just one of our many stops that first week. But it was one of my favorite stops. We didn't get a lot of time to explore and your website helps explain alot of the things that were left unexplained to me. Most appreciated! Also, I am looking for any websites that could link me to england jewelers so that I might purchase a keepsake pendant from my trip. Any suggestions?

Why does everyone praise Bath (probably tourists mostly) when it is becoming untidy (there is always bags of rubbish and cardboard littering the pavements days before collection), high amounts of traffic jamming up the roads in the town centre, constant noise from various things (especially fireworks for months on end in Winter, car alarms and helicoptors - that seem to be flying for no reason), students skateboarding down the roads (which is illegal) and yobbos and gangs of youths hanging about the place, such as the golf course.....and so on !?

However, imagine our diappointment to find we coulnd't book just one night but have to book two. Due to work commitments we are unable to spend two nights in Bath. Hi there!

I used to study at Uni of Bath a year ago. Unfortunately, it was only for one semester. Bath was rather expensive city until I found a job at Bink's Restaurant right by the Abbey Churchyard!

I'll NEVER forget those nice summer moments there. Watching the performances of jugglers, listening to the musicians, romantic walks by the Avon Canal along with gorgeous girls from all around the world, having fun in marvelous green parks, hanging around the streets. Thank you Bath!

Have fun everyone there!

I wondered why there is a charge of £15 to cycle the canal towpath to the east. This seems a heavy charge. We cycled it many years ago and it is delightful, and it is such a shame that this levy has been introduced.
I would be most interested to know more about this charge and who's idea it was?

I am a journalist and have completed an article for a daily newspaper here in Canada on my visit to Bath last year, when I went to 12, The Royal Crescent, where my wild, beautiful and unhappily married great-great-great-grandmother Mrs. William Provis lived and made merry in the late 18th, early 19th centuries.
I am anxious to get a photo of the Whole Royal Crescent, to accompany my article. I would of course credit your organization or photographer.

Charming website, surely a reflection of the charming nature of your city's folks. This flattery, of course, is because I need a hand from any locals who might be able to help me with either (a) explicit dialing instructions from the US to one of your Bath businesses (I dialed the country code and their number as given on their web site, and repeatedly got a message asking for more numbers) or (b) obtaining their e-mail address (they have a web site, but listed no e-mail address -- even a company on the Batrh.co.uk website offering e-mail services did not list their own e-mail address [strange?]). I wish to make contact with K. Toys in Bath, to see if they have a North American distributor, or if they export their products (toy wheels) directly. Because of the time zones (along with the common language) that separate us, e-mail communications would be preferable, if possible.

Can some kind soul help a Rocky Mountain curmudgeon with this information?

We spent a lovely 4 nights in Bath and stayed at the lovely Paradise Inn B & B up in the hills behind the rail station. It was an uphill walk every night after site seeing the town but worth it for the views of the Abby and crescents throughout the town. One morning 7 large Flying Balloons graced our view looking out over the city. It was the stuff of dreams for a photographer. That was our second time in Bath, the first being a daily visit by train from London. We knew we had to come back. It is a totally charming city with its butter colored buildings and still so much intact. We will return!

Another wonderful part of Bath was the Bizarre Bath Comedy walking tour. It was truly "hysterical rather than historical." After being inundated with Roman and Georgian history it was nice to simply have some fun.
