Stonehenge is probably the most important prehistoric monument in the whole of Britain not to mention the most well known stone circle in the world. This mysterious site has generated much speculation and wild theories as to how the stones got there and why.

Avebury lies in the heart of the Wiltshire Downs just west of Marlborough – the most ancient borough in England. It is the only village in the world inside a stone circle, one of the largest henge’s in Britain.
Glastonbury is a small market town, well known for its annual music festival (although to be more precise the festival takes place several miles away in Pilton). Along with its historic Abbey, Chalice Well, Holy Thorn Tree and its best-known landmark Glastonbury Tor, it has become a world famous spiritual centre of pilgrimage.
The Tor offers spectacular views over Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire and is well worth the climb, which isn’t too strenuous although I’d advise you wear comfortable shoes. Glastonbury’s High Street is lined with a variety of shops and cafes to rest in after your climb to the Tor!
This quaint medieval town was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book as a thriving market town. Steeped in history, there are plenty of places of interest to visit including the Saxon church of St Laurence and Barton Farm Country Park, which is a short walk from the town centre.
The Tithe Barn at Barton Farm dates back to the 14th century, it is well worth a visit as it’s surrounded by other Medieval farm buildings (plus, a scene was filmed here for blockbuster film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves).

Silbury Hill, one of the largest man-made mounds in Europe can be found about 1 mile away from Avebury. The hill still baffles archaeologists today as to why it was built some 4,300 years ago.

The small town of Westbury in Wiltshire lies not far from its famous White Horse hill carving and like Bradford on Avon, it to is mentioned in the Doomesday Book of 1086. There are a large number of chalk hill carvings in Wiltshire, Westbury’ being the oldest in the county. The White Horse can be seen from miles and is easy to get to by car, with plenty of parking spaces. The hill on which the White Horse is carved in is popular for kite flying, hand and para-gliding and radio control flying, plus, there are great views of the surrounding countryside.

The beautiful Cathedral city of Wells in Somerset is England’s smallest city. Best known for its Medieval Cathedral and other ancient buildings it is steeped in heritage.
