SOMERSET LEVELS
AND MENDIP HILLS
|
|
The
Somerset Levels and Moors are the real Somerset or "Sumer
saeta" - the land of the summer people. The area's history is
coloured by people of strong character and tough disposition - the
early man who lived off the marshes some 6,000 years ago; King
Alfred (who burnt the cakes); the medieval Monks who created the
great abbeys; the heroes of the Civil Wars; and today the farmers of
the moors producing golden cider, white wine, yellow cheese, red
strawberries, black peat, and brown willows among the blue wetlands.

Glastonbury
- steeped in mist and legend; linked with Joseph of Arimathea and
the early Christian church, and Celtic mythology - the fabled Isle
of Avalon, the resting place of the hero-king Arthur; throughout the
ages, and still, a major centre of pilgrimage.

| The
Mendip Hills is one of the most distinctive, oldest
inhabited parts of England. Formed 3 million years ago, the
limestone ridge gives way to the deep gorges of Cheddar and
Burrington Combe. Mined for its minerals since earliest times, it
now attracts pot-holers and rock climbers, and is famous for its
cheese, caves and cliffs.
